My dad being in the US Navy for 22 years, boat were n still are a big
part of his life. At 8o, he still owns 4 canoes. Any way, I took him to
an area of the island I thought me may enjoy. We rented a 2 man Kayak
(they had 3 man kayaks, but the wife would have NO part of it) from
a Danish sausage maker from Chicago pictured left, drove down to Kealakekua
bay n paddled the 1.5 miles (2421m) across it.

.The
big deal/idea many choose this place to Ocean Kayak is the fact than near
the monument pictured below, Capt. Cook was killed by the Hawaiians in
Feb. of 1779. The exact story is somewhat involved, but in the end, he
was killed over basically a misunderstanding, largely due to the vast difference
between cultures. I seem to be fascinated by all history, and especially
Hawaiian history, so bing in this spot is a history buffs' cup of tea.

About half way over to the monument, my dad casually mentions to me
that he had once anchored in Kealakekua bay over night just before Pearl
Harbor when he was on a WW I mine sweeper assigned to target towing duty
off the Kona coast.

This spot surrounded by the chain around the
monument is actually British soil n is visited by one of Her Majesty's
ship yearly to be maintained n repaired.
Pops n I had a good time, but a 5o year old with an 8o year old paddling a kayak in the ocean for the first time, 3 miles was enough. Nonetheless, we were both bushed when we got back to the populated side of Kealakekua bay.
Once we got back, we sat down on a picnic table to rest, meeting 3 Hawaiian
n ended up sharing a beer as we "talked story" (shooting the bull) for
a half hour or so. Turned out, this one guy was raised one town away from
me when I was a boy in Hawaii.
